Coal mining companies PT Kaltim Prima Coal and PT Indominco Mandiri obtained a "gold rating" from the East Kalimantan provincial administration for best practices in helping to protect the local environment particularly in the area of water pollution control, the local Kaltim Post daily reported on Friday.

The gold rating was given by the local office of the Bapedalda environmental watchdog.

East Kalimantan Governor led a ceremony on Thursday to congratulate companies which obtain the gold rating certificate.

The paper did not say how many companies received the gold rating certificate.

But it said that seven companies (mostly plantation firms) received bad rating, and were given six months to boost their performance or would risk sanction including a possible suspension of their license.(*)
