KPC lowers ratio of working accidence to 0.22

The East Kalimantan-coal producer PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) successfully reduced the ratio of injuries caused by working accidence to 0.22 in 2002, the second lowest recorded by 60 companies under the Rio Tinto group. Bisnis Indonesia reported on Saturday.

KPC has implemented the NOSA-based Prima Nirbhaya Safety System to ensure a safe workplace. One measure of safety performance is the Disabling Injury Frequency Rate (DIFR), which using one million employee-hours of work as its basis.

KPC?s president director Noke Kiroyan said in Balikpapan on Friday that the company would further reduce the ratio of injuries caused by working accidence in the future to zero.

"Last year the ratio of the injuries caused by working accidence was 0.22, little bit higher than the targeted 0.18. We are optimistic that the company would be able to maintain the 2002 achievement this year," he was quoted as saying.

KPC which started its coal mine operation in East Kalimantan in 1992 is one of 60 companies under the Rio Tinto group which operate in several countries including the United States, Canada, Carribia, Australia, South Afrika, Brazil and Indonesia. (*)
