The management of the East Kalimantan coal mining giant PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) has recently managed to sign an accord with four labor unions without the involvement of external parties.
The company said in a statement that the agreement was signed on July 23 by four labor unions called KORPRA, SBSI, SPKEP, and PPMI.
The statement said that the accord would be effective for two years until June 30, 2003.
The statement did not clearly explain what the accord was, but it seems to be a guideline to settle future internal labor problem peacefully without resorting to destructive means and external parties that would only jeopardize the existent of the company.
KPC is based in Sangatta, East Kalimantan, employing some 2,700 employees. KPC is equally owned by Rio Tinto and BP. In the past, it has often been a target of labor protest which lead to blockade and production halt.(*)
