East Kalimantan-based coalmining giant PT Kaltim Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) has received the Zero Accident Award from the government, a company official said.

The award was given in recognition of KPC's achievement in maintaining an accident free workplace during 5,437,881 working hours from March 18 to June 16, 2003, Nunik Maharani Maulana, KPC?s external relations manager, said in a press release.

President Megawati Soekarnoputri presented the award during a special ceremony held at the State Place on Monday (Jan. 12). Another 231 industrial companies, mostly from East Java and East Kalimantan, received similar awards on the same occasion.

KPC, controlled by publicly listed PT Bumi Resources, operates a huge coalmine in Sangatta district. Bumi Resources last year took over entire shares of the company from world mining and energy giants Rio Tinto and BP Plc. (*)
