Amidst troubled financial performance of its parent company, Indonesian giant coal miner PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) is planning to develop new multiple facilities capable of handling 105 MT of coal per year.

KPC plans to increase its coal handling facilites by building new stockpiles, overland conveyor and crushers in two different areas. Andrew Lau, Manager Strategic Planning of KPC recently explained the details of the project to Petromindo.com. Currently KPC is finishing new overland conveyor (OLC) which is built side by side with the old one. Each OLC is able to handle 4500 tons per hour of coal moving at 8.48 m/s speed. The OLCs are 13 kilometers in length.

Beside installing new OLC, KPC is developing new crushers in the western and northern areas. Under the plan, coal produced from western area will be transported to a stockpile having capacity of 800,000 tons. While coal from northern area will go to a stockpile with 600,000 tons of capacity. Western part of the project will increase KPC?s output by 45 million tons per year while the northern part will add 60 million tons.

To power the expansion facilities, KPC plans to built three power plants of 2X15 MW and 1X15 MW. New second ship loader and barge loading facilites are also included in the expansion plan.
