KPC?s workers still on strike

Workers of East Kalimantan-based coalminer PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) are still on strike on Tuesday with a labor union leader saying that they will end their action only if they have reached an agreement with the company?s shareholders.

?The labor strike will continue until an agreement is reached. We are keeping demanding KPC shareholders to pay compensation to us,? Sem Karta, chairman of Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union (SBSI) at KPC, told Petromindo.com.

Around 2,700 workers of KPC went on strike last Friday allegedly because the company management turned down their demand for a cash bonus after the company?s shareholders? decision to sell entire shares of KPC to PT Bumi Resources. Their action halted KPC?s coal production and loading activities.

KPC said Monday its officials and leaders of the protesting workers would hold talks Tuesday (today).

KPC?s coal output is mostly for exports.

World mining and energy giants Rio Tinto and BP Plc equally own KPC. (godang)
