PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), one of major coal producers in East Kalimantan, will spend at least about US$5 million a year for the company's corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, mainly for community development projects.

Harry Miarso, the company's general manager for external affairs, said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the funds would be used to carry out community development projects for the villages located near its mining areas in the regencies of Sanggata and East Kutai in East Kalimantan.

"The community development includes the establishment of a pilot project for cocoa plantation, and the extension of credits to farmers living in villages near the company's mining areas," he said in the discussion on the implementation of CSR in Indonesia organized by the University of Trisakti.

Thoby Mutis, the rector of the university, said in the discussion that a company should set aside at least 15 percent of its profit for CSR programs for the nearby communities so that the people living nearby could also share the welfare enjoyed by the company. (*)
