East Kalimantan coal producer PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) signed on Tuesday MoU with state-owned electricity firm PT PLN, under which the former would supply excess power from its new coal-fired power plant to the latter to be then distributed to local households in Sangatta and surrounding areas, local reports said.

The MoU was signed by KPC CEO Muhammad Rudi and General Manager of PLN East Kalimantan regional office, Rustamadji, witnessed by senior local administration officials, Tribunkalitm.co reported.

Rudi was quoted as saying that KPC, a subsidiary of IDX-listed coal giant PT Bumi Resources Tbk, initially built a 3x5 MW coal-fired power plant for own use.

But the company, in cooperation with PT Citra Kusuma Perdana, later built a second 3x18 MW coal-fired power plant, also in Sangatta, to facilitate expansion of coal production.

The first unit of 18 MW has started operation since October of last year, while the second and third unit are slated to begin commissioning in April of this year, Rudi said.

Of the total 3x18 MW capacity, about 1x18 MW will be allocated for PLN, he added. (*)
