Coal mining company PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) in Sangatta, East Kalimantan has turned down the demand of two local farmer groups for land compensation, claiming the company had fully paid the compensation, according to local daily Kaltim Post.

The paper quoted head of company representative office in Balikpapan Hasrul Sani as saying that the company had compensated the farmers for their land on Jan. 30, this year based on land data provided by the province's land dispute-settlement agency.

Based on the data, KPC was obliged to pay compensations for 58 farmer groups for a total of 7273.5 hectares of land.

The paper however said the so-called Karya Bersama and Olah Bebaya farmer groups, which claim to have about 600 members, through their lawyer, had demanded KPC re-measure the land owned by the farmers and pay compensations to the farmers based on the data resulting from the re-measuring of the land.
