Krakatau Steel to soon start operation of second hot strip mill

IDX-listed steel maker PT Krakatau Steel Tbk hopes to be able to start operation of its second hot strip mill in Cilegon, Banten Province, in June of this year after mechanical completion of the mill in April, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Friday.
The paper quoted Krakatau President Director Silmy Karim as saying that the US$515 million hot strip mill has an installed production capacity of 1.5 million tons per year.
The second hot strip mill is part of ongoing expansion projects to develop a steel industry cluster in Cilegon with combined production capacity of 10 million tons per year from facilities operated by Krakatau Steel and Krakatau Posco.
He said that with the new hot strip mill, the total installed production capacity (of Krakatau Steel and Krakatau Posco) has now reached 7 million tons per year. The two companies are currently engaged in a number of expansion projects to reach the targeted 10 million tons per annum capacity. (*)
