IDX-listed steel maker PT Krakatau Steel has signed an agreement with a consortium comprising of MCC-CERI (China) and PT Krakatau Engineering to increase the production capacity of its coke oven plant from 500,000 tons per year to 555,000 tons per year with investment of US$14 million.

The company said in a statement obtained Monday that the capacity expansion will allow its $542.6 million blast furnace plant, which is currently being developed, to be able to fully secure its coke requirement independently, especially as the capacity of the blast furnace facility is expected to be further expanded from 1.2 million tons per year to 1.4 million tons per year.

Krakatau Steel said that the first blow-in, which marks the operation of the blast furnace, is targeted at the end of 2015 at the latest.

The company is currently in the process of constructing the blast furnace facility, located at its industrial complex in Cilegon, Banten, which includes Sintering Plant, Coke Oven Plant, Blast Furnace, Hot MetalTreatment Plant, and other supporting facilities.
