SGX-listed KS Orka Renewables Pte Ltd said it is currently in negotiation with state-owned electricity firm PT PLN over power plant system change at the PLTP Sorik Merapi geothermal power plant project in Mandailing Regency, North Sumatra Province.

KS Orka spokesperson Syahrini Nuryanti told Petromindo.com on Friday that the company plans to connect around 10 MW to local grid at the end of this year.

?We?re also still in the process of negotiation with PLN for the change because we?ll use a different power plant system. We don?t need to develop large power plant so that it can be completed end of this year,? she said.

Syahrini said that as the local grid doesn?t have the capacity yet to accommodate 20 MW. The company will only supply 10 MW, at least by the end of this year.

She said that the power plant will use the wellhead unit system. ?So the power plant will not be a large one connected to several well pads, but will be a number of smaller power plants in several areas. For now, we?ll develop power plant with capacity of 10 MW. The total capacity (of the PLTP Sorik Merapi project), hopefully will be in accordance with the initial estimate of 240 MW,? she said.

Meanwhile, Director of Geothermal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Yunus Saefulhak confirmed that the PLTP Sorik Merapi project will use wellhead power plant technology with smaller scale capacity of 10 MW, targeted to be on stream end of this year. He added that KS Orka has conducted exploration at eight drilling holes in the Sorik Merapi geothermal working area.

KS Orka currently owns the 240 MW Sorik geothermal power plant project, following the acquisition of 100 percent of PT OTP Geothermal Pte Ltd from Origin Energy Geothermal Singapore Pte Ltd and Tata Power International Pte Ltd. PT OTP Geothermal owns 95 percent of PT Sorik Merapi Geothermal Power, the owner of the Sorik geothermal power plant project.
