Some 512 workers of state oil and gas company Pertamina's contractors in Sangatta, East Kalimantan have been on strike since Thursday, demanding longer contract period.
Four workers, claimed to represent the striking workers, in a visit to local daily Suara Kaltim's office on Thursday, told the papers that the worker demanded their working contract period be extended to three years from one year at present. They also demanded that the workers, who have worked for more than ten years, be given pay hike.
They warned that the workers would continue their strike until their demands were met.
They said under the current one-year working contract, the workers only receive one-month severance pay if their contracts ended and were not renewed.
Meanwhile, an executive of the Indonesian Prosperity Trade Union (SBSI), BR Sirait, told the paper contractor workers at Pertamina's operation in Sangatta work under one-month working contract that workers, who have worked for 15 years, would not receive any benefits when their contracts end. (*)
