Landslide traps one worker at Freeport mine

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) reported on Saturday a landslide has happened at its underground mine in the West Muck Bay area, Tembagapura, Timika, Papua, trapping one worker inside the mine.

The incident took place at 11.30 pm local time at the Grasgberg Block Cave (GBC) mine. Materials in the form of rocks and earth fell while the ground support activities were in progress, The materials covered some of the Jumbo Drill vehicles used during the activities.

One of the Jumbo Drill operators managed to escape, but his co-worker was trapped in the landslide. Works to rescure him is now in progress. Soon after the incident, PTFI fielded Emergency Response Group to help and evacuate. The firm has reported the case to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
