Coal mining firm PT Lanna Harita Indonesia (LHI) in East Kalimantan will decide whether or not to compensate local villagers for environmental pollution caused by its activities, local daily Kaltim Post reported on Saturday.
Company manager Medan Rantege Tandung said on Friday the company management was completing reports based on this week?s field observation by LHI together with local government officials and Tanah Merah villagers.
Tanah Merah villagers had demanded LHI to give them Rp320 million (US$=Rp 8,625) in compensation of pollution of their environment caused by the company?s mining activities.
Kaltim Post said some 60 households could no longer consume water from area rivers because it had been polluted. The river water color had even changed, and many fish in area ponds might die.
LHI is 55 percent owned by Thailand?s Lanna Ignite. (*)
