Lion Energy side tracking LOFIN-1 well

ASX-listed Lion Energy is side tracking its LOFIN-1 exploration well on Seram Island, Indonesia, which took a significant high pressure ?kick? after reaching its total depth.

?Current operations on the LOFIN-1 exploration well being drilled on Seram Island in Indonesia are preparing to sidetrack the well after the drill string packed off below the 9-5/8 inch casing shoe at 11,460 feet,? the company said in an update statement to the Australia Stock Exchange on Wednesday.

Despite efforts to free the pipe, including perforating the drill pipe at various intervals in the open hole section and attempting circulation, then pulling on the drill string with 50,000 pounds over pull, the string could not be freed.

Subsequently, the drill pipe inside the 9-5/8 inch casing was perforated over the interval 11,375 to 11,385 feet and the well successfully killed with 14.6 ppg mud.

After running a free point tool on wireline, the drill pipe was cut at 11,400 feet and the drill string pulled out of the hole after ensuring the well was static. The drill string below 11,400 feet remains stuck in the well bore. A cement plug has now been run on top of the stuck section of drill pipe. cement has been drilled out and a casing scraper run to 11,300 feet in preparation for sidetrack drilling in an attempt to reach the primary objective, the Manusela Carbonate.

The LOFIN-1 exploration well was spudded on 17 January 2012.

The LOFIN-1 prospect is a thrust fold four-way dip closure anticline, which is located approximately 56 kms to the west of the producing Oseil oil field that has produced in excess of 10 million barrels of crude oil since production start-up in late 2002.

The LOFIN prospect is identified by 2D seismic lines.

The primary target, the Manusela Carbonate, is interpreted to be similar in reservoir characteristics to the Oseil oil field reservoir. The vertical closure of the LOFIN prospect as mapped is in excess of 550 metres (1,800 feet) from the crest to the lowest closing contour (LCC).
