The head of the transmigration office in Manokwari, Nafrul Efendy Hutapea, said that the planned development of liquefied natural gas plant by PT ARCO in Bintuni Gulf, Irian Jaya, would benefit transmigrants in the area.

"The planned development (of the LNG plant) sends a fresh air to transmigrants in the Bintuni Gulf, especially it would enable them market their farming products," he said in Manokwari on Saturday.

He acknowledged that so far, the fate of transmigrants in the Bintuni Gulf was in dire situation because of the lack of infrastructure that prevented them from selling their farming products.

There are currently 9,424 families of transmigrants or 40,408 people were living in Manokwari district, spreading in various areas.

Therefore Nafrul hoped that planned development of the LNG project would be materialized soon to help improve the lives of those transmigrants. (*)
