The government and the people of Irian Jaya or Papua will continue to support and maintain the operation of PT Freeport Indonesia so that the giant copper and gold mining company will not leave the province, local paper Timika Post reported on Saturday.

?We will not let Freeport to leave from the Cenderawasih land (Irian Jaya ) in any condition,? the secretary for the Commission B of the Irian Jaya Legislative Council, Sam Resbun, said, adding that the company had contributed a lot to the province?s development program.

He was commenting on rumors that the United States government would pull out all the American investment in Indonesia due to growing anti-American sentiment in the country.

According to Sam, Freeport contributed about 80 percent of the province?s total revenues.(*)
