The Samarinda Mayoralty administration in East Kalimantan Province has suspended production activity at Makroman mine site in Sambutan District owned by coal miner PT Lanna Harita Indonesia (LHI) since November 4, local reports said.
The move was made following complaints from some villagers that the company has yet to pay compensation for the Makroman mine area acquired by the company. News portal Samarinda.com said that the suspension move was supported by local youth groups and some villagers.
LHI protested the unilateral suspension of the Makroman mine production activity. LHI Commissioner Parasian Simanungkalit claimed that the company has completed payment of compensation for the mine site, located in inhabited area. He said that any protest over the land acquisition process should be settled through negotiation, not violent action and unilateral closure of production activity. He also questioned why the villagers are complaining now about the compensation, not in the past when acquisition process was in progress.
Parasian said that LHI will take counter legal measure such as by reporting the incident to the policy as the company has suffered financial losses due to the suspension of production. (*)
