A local NGO (non-governmental organization ) activist in Sorong, Irian Jaya Province, called on oil firm Lasmo Oil to hold a seminar to disseminate the result of its recent oil survey in the areas of Inanwatan, Matemani, Kais and Kokoda.

JP Akuray was quoted by the local Fajar Papua daily as saying that Lasmo must be transparent and provide clear information to the local community about its operation in the area including how to protect the environment, community development program, and the participation of local people in the oil operation.

Akuray said that the local people would continue to be suspicious about Lasmo?s oil operation if the company failed to win the hearts of the people.

He said that holding a seminar would be one way to disseminate information to the public.

Akuray said that many investors from outside Irian Jaya had entered Sorong to exploit local natural resources but so far they have little commitment to develop and improve the welfare of the local people.

He also said that Lasmo must allow local people to work in the company including in management level.

Akuray called on local authorities not to be too closed with Lasmo as the company had yet to show its commitment to the people.(*)
