Local ship owners want exclusive rights to transport oil, coal in RI

Indonesian National Ship Owners Association (INSA) has urged the government to give national ship owners exclusive rights to transport crude oil and coal within Indonesia, Bisnis Indonesia daily reported Monday.

The paper quoted INSA?s secretary general Muhammad Syawal as saying over the weekend that officials from different government ministries were deliberating its proposal.

The paper did not provide details about the proposal.

Foreign-flagged carriers had so far dominated transportation of oil products and coal in Indonesia, Muhammad said.

Muhammad said that the value of Indonesian crude and coal transported annually amount to US$2 billion. He added that some 180 million metric cubic of Indonesian crude were transported annually, and that only 20 percent of them was shipped by national fleets. (*)
