Mahakam river closes for 13 days

Kutai Kartanegara Regional Government and the collapsed Kartanegara Bridge contractor PT Hutama Karya have decided to close the traffic of Mahakam River between 4-17 November 2012 to start the physical re-construction of the bridge, Kaltim Post reported Monday.
"It is important to close the river during the period for safety reasons, as Hutama Karya will lay down the bridge pylon," Hutama Karya Project Supervisor Idwan Suhendra said during his presentation to the regional government.
Having collapsed on Saturday, November 26, 2011, destroying public vehicles and taking dozens of lives with it, the accident has also caused coal barging activities troublesome for companies like Tanito Harum, Mahakam Sumber Jaya, Santan Batubara, Trubaindo, Kitadin, Jembayan Muarabara, Kimco Armindo, Multi Harapan Utama, Kayan Putra Utama, Teguh Sinar Abadi and Firman Ketaun with estimated total volume of around 200,000 tons per day.
