I Dewa Gde Ngurah Swastha, an influential community leader in the province, said that the majority of the Balinese people thought that the construction of the geothermal power plant would not only benefit the local people but also those living outside Bedugul, one of sacred areas in Bali.

?They believe that the construction of the plant will not cause any harm to the environment as many people fear,? said I Dewa Gde, who is also the chairman of MDP, a major religious and cultural organization in Bali.

The construction of the Bedugul geothermal power plant has been delayed due to protests from a number of environmental advocacy groups who said that the construction of the power plant would damage the environment in the sacred Bedugul area. (dino)
