The Malaysian government has stopped the safeguard investigation into HRC steel products imported from Indonesia, a development that is expected to open new market opportunities for Indonesian HRC producers.

Acting Director General of International Trade at the Ministry of Trade Karyanto Suprih said in a statement last week that the Malaysian authorities announced January 6 that it had found no evidence of injuries to local industries caused by the import of Indonesian HRC products.

He said that Malaysia started the investigation in September of last year at the request of local steel producer Megasteel Sdn Bhd.

Karyanto said that export of HRC steel products to Malaysia from Indonesia has been on the rise since 2012. By 2014, Indonesian HRC accounted for 6.1 percent of Malaysia?s total HRC imports.
