Malaysia to import 29.7 mtpa coal in five years

Malaysia is expected to import coal about 29.7 mtpa (bituminous and sub-bitum?nous) in the next five year.
Mohd Shaiful Bahri Hussain, Managing Director of TNB Fuel Services Sdn Bhd, a Malaysia coal importer company said that such amount was needed to fulfill coal supply for new power plants.
Mohd Shaiful explained that a 2x1000 MW brown field coal fired power Stations in Manjung and Tanjung Bin was expected to come on stream by 2015/16.
Another planned power plant with the capacity of 3x1000 MW would increase coal demand to 40 mtpa by 2020.
Malaysia would import an estimated 23 mtpa of coal by 2012.
Mohd Shaiful added that the cement industry represented the second largest coal user reaching 3 mtpa.
Mohd Shaiful said that as an coal improrter company TNBF procures coal based on market prices.
