North Kalimantan coal mining firm PT Mandiri Intiperkasa, which is part of the Mandiri Group, expects coal output this year to reach five million tons, or higher than the four million tons target set under its 2017 work and budget plan submitted to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Herman Kasih, Senior Advisor of Mandiri Group said on Tuesday that production in the first half of this year has reached three million tons.

He did not say the reason for the higher than initially planned coal production target this year, but it comes amid the current recovery in the price of the commodity.

Mandiri, which operates mines in Nunukan, exports about 70 percent of its output to China and the rest to other Asian markets.
