North Kalimantan coal mining firm PT Mandiri Intiperkasa, which is part of the Mandiri Group, said that coal production last year reached only around 3 million tons, far lower than the 5 million tons target.

?There are many factors (causing the lower than planned output) particularly nature,? said Mandiri Group Director Herman Kasih to Petromindo.com on Wednesday, but did not provide further details.

He said that the company has submitted its 2017 work and budget plan to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources including a proposed coal output of 4 million tons for this year.

Mandiri, which operates mines in Nunukan, exports about 70 percent of its output to China and the rest to other Asian markets.
