A number of illegal coal terminals have been built in many parts of Kota Baru regency in South Kalimantan, facilitating illegal coal mining activities in the regency, Republika daily reported on Monday.

According to the newspaper's source, most of the illegal coal terminals are found in several areas in Batulicin and Satui districts. The illegal coal ports were built by individuals and companies.

"The tariff of the illegal coal ports is between Rp 4,000 and Rp 10,000 per ton," the source said, adding that many people had also built temporary roads to enable coal trucks to get access to the ports from the main roads. "A truck is usually required to pay Rp 2,000 to pass the road," he added.

According to the special team of the local legislative council, at least 23 illegal coal ports have been found in the Kota Baru regency. A half of them are no longer active. (*)
