Market overview from globalCoal for January 06

Value felt generally higher across all physical hubs today, with most of the strength seen in the morning session. March DES traded twice, first at $110.10/t DES AR, then later at $110.05/t DES AR, compared to yesterdays best bid at $109.50/t for the same terms. Richards Bay supply remained tight at the front end, with February loaders bid up to $106.50/t FOB, $0.25/t higher than yesterday's traded level. In addition, Q3'12 and Q4'12 Newcastle tonnes also changed hands, both at +0.50/t. Paper markets headed the other way today, with Cal 12 API2 and API4 contract down around $0.25/t and $0.50/t respectively. Oil also made a slight loss, with front month Brent losing $0.17/bbl to sit at $112.57/bbl near close of play.

During Asian trading hours, prices remained firm from yesterday and showed no sign of weakening. The price gap between demand and supply is prominent with the bid/offer at $112.80/125.00/mt for a 70kt parcel in Mar'12.
