Japan’s Marubeni Corporation has won a tender for the upgrading of state electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik negara’s (PLN) Muara Tawar combined cycle power plant in Bekasi and the Tanjung Priok combined cycle power plant in North Jakarta, with a total investment of US$ 850 million, Investor Daily reported Tuesday.

The upgrading works will increase the capacity of Muara Tawar by 225 megawatts (MW) and Tanjung Priok by 720 MW from the current 900 MW and 1,300 MW respectively.

“We announced them (the tender winners) yesterday. They won the tender because they offer the lowest price,” PLN’s Director for Power Plant and Primary Energy Ali Herman Ibrahim was quoted by the daily as saying in Jakarta on Monday.

According to Ali Herman, Marubeni that teams up with France’s Alstom has won the upgrading work of the Muara Tawar power plant after bidding out its rivals, Mitsui, Mitsubishi and Siemens.

Meanwhile for the Tanjung Priok power plant Marubeni that teams up with Siemens has won the tender after defeating its rivals Mitsubishi, Mitsui-Alstom and Sumitomo-General Electric.

Ali Herman asserted that the upgrading of Muara Tawar and Tanjung Priok would be funded by soft loan from Japan Bank for International Corporation (JPIC). “We are hoping that Marubeni can complete the project in 2009,” he said. (*)
