Marunda?s coking coalmine on schedule to commence production November

?We have targeted that all construction works will be completed by September 2003 after that the trial production will be started," MGM?s marketing director, K. T. Seng told Petromindo.Com in a telephone interview.
He said his company current operation is finishing the 55 km road for coal truck transport and the construction of barge jetty at Barito River.
?The first commercial production is expected to be of 400,000 tons in Japan Fiscal Year (JFY) 2003, then 800,000 tons in (JFY) 2004 and rising to 2.0 million ton in JFY 2006,? said Seng, adding that his company?s 20 percent shareholder, Itochu Corporation, will market most of the product to some blast furnace steel producers in Japan.
?First shipment is expected in November or December this year.?
Beside Japan market, MGM also seeks to sell its product to Taiwan, Korea, China, and European markets.
He explained the mined coal from site would be transported by truck (about 55 km) to the 3,500 tons barge?s jetty and then shipped to South Pulau Laut Coal Terminal (about 780 km). Transported coal would store at the terminal and would ship out to Japan (and other destinations) by Panamax size vessels or handy size.
MGM is Indonesia?s first coal mine, which will produce high volatile bituminous semi-soft coking coal. The marketing ratio is expected to be 80 percent as semi-soft coking coal and 20 percent as high calorific value thermal coal.
