Coal mining company PT Maruwei Coal, a subsidiary of the BHP-Billiton group, has found high-grade coal in its coal mining area in Maruwei village in the district of Laung Tahup, Central Kalimantan, Suara Karya reported on Monday.
The project manager of the BHP-Billiton group, Leseter Robinson, said in Puruk Cahu, the capital of the Murung Raya regency, over the weekend that the coal deposit found in the Maruwei mining area, which is popularly known as "Kokas Coking" were among the highest grade coal in the world.
"Such high quality coal could be used as a raw material for the production for steel. That's why its price is generally two times higher than the ordinary coal," he said.
PT Maruwei, which is now conducting feasibility study, hopes it will be able to start commercial production in 2005. (*)
