IDX-listed shipping firm PT Mitrabahtera Segara Sejati Tbk (MBSS) is adding two new tugboats worth US$5 million this year as the company seeks to expand its fleet.

Kontan quoted Finance Director Ika Bethari as saying that the company has acquired one vessel with capacity of 2,400 hp, and plans to buy another in the second quarter of this year.

Funding for the vessel acquisition comes from internal cash reserves, which stood at about $32 million.

The acquisition of the new vessels expands MBSS?s fleet to include 85 units of tugboat, 78 unit of barge, 7 units of floating crane, one unit of cement vessel, and one unit of supporting vessel.

Ika said that the acquisition of the new tugboats forms part of the company?s strategy to move toward larger vessels to create better efficiency and provide more competitive service tariff.

MBSS, which provides river and sea coal transportation, expects to obtain renewal contracts from existing clients worth $44 million this year.

She said that despite the lingering downturn in global coal market, the company is hopeful that its coal logistics business will be better this year than last year?s on the prospect domestic coal shipment in the wake of coal-fired power plant development in the country.

She acknowledged that MBSS has obtained contract to transport coal to power plant, but declined to disclose the name of the client. (*)
