China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC) reported that work to build a ferronickel plant with annual output of 300,000 tons per annum in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, was fully commenced on December 15, 2013.
The company said that the project is under supervision of the company?s unit Maishiji Engineering Consulting Company. It is not immediately clear who the project owner is.
According to the company, the project is adjacent to the provincial highway and the export terminal of nickel ore.
?The jobsite is one of the regions endowed with the largest reserves and production capability of nickel laterite ore in the country, with an annual output of 6 million tons, which will offer sufficient raw material guarantee for the smelting plant,? the company said in a release.
The project scope covers smelting equipment such as the rotary kiln and the ore-smelting electric furnace, as well as the infrastructure facilities such as the self-built power plant. The RKEF technical process will be employed for production of ferronickel. After completion, the annual processing capacity will be about 3 million tons of nickel laterite ore, and the output of ferronickel (containing 11% of nickel) will be 300,000 tons per annum.
The company did not give detail about project completion date.
