IDX-listed energy company PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk plans to team up with IDX-listed coal miner PT Harum Energy Tbk to build a 2x1,000 MW coal-fired power plant in West Java, Kontan reported on Thursday.

The paper quoted Vice President for Industrial Estate and Power Generation at Medco?s unit PT Medco Resources, Bambang Triharyono as saying that the project is still at the study phase, and the company is still seeking for the exact location of the planned project.

He added that coal supply for the planned power plant will come from Harum?s coal concession in South Kalimantan. The coal supply is estimated at 600,000-700,000 tons per year.

Bambang said that total investment for the project is estimated at US$3.5 billion. Funding will among others come from foreign banks, he said.

Medco Energi President Director Lukman Mahfoedz last week announced plan to build a 2x800 MW combined-cycle power plant, to be also located in West Java. The company has signed an MoU with state-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina for the supply of the required gas. (*)
