Indonesia-listed PT Medco Energi Internasional is exploring shale gas potentials in its working areas in Sumatra and Kalimantan.

?We are still at the level of studying this shale gas potential,? President Director Lukman Mahfoeds told petromindo.com. He did not elaborate.

Medco is joining a growing number of companies wishing to tap into Indonesia?s shale gas industry. The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry said that it has so far received at least 37 joint study requests, four of which have already been approved.

The four companies are PT Pertamina, consortium of Pacific Oil & Gas Indonesia and Bukit Energy, consortium of Central Sumatra Energy & Indrillco Bakti, and PT MIT Ivel Geoscience-Central Sumatera Energy.
