Medco Mining eyes domestic cement industry as new market

PT Medco Mining Internasional (MMI), which through subsidiary PT Duta Tambang Rekayasa (DTR) operates mine in North Kalimantan, is looking into domestic cement industry as new potential market as the industry is set to grow amid the government?s aggressive program to develop new infrastructure facilities.

?We?re trying to look into domestic cement market (segment) because of our coal specification,? said Budi Basuki, COO of Power & Mining at MMI on Wednesday, pointing out to the coal?s high sulfur content of more than 5 percent, thus more suitable for cement industry. He did not provide further details.

MMI has been exporting its coal to cement companies overseas such as in India, Thailand, and Pakistan.

DTR, which operates coal mine in Nunukan, North Kalimantan, plans to produce around 600,000 tons of coal this year.
