PT Medco Power Indonesia (Medco Power) said that it is now ready to start the development of its new gas-fired power plant (PLTG) with the arrival of turbine at the capacity of 70 megawatt (MW) in Kepulauan Riau province this week.

The company said in a press statement on Tuesday that the PLTG machine is the type of Heavy Duty Frame 6B made by GE France.

Medco Power through its subsidiary PT Energi Listrik Batam, has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with PT PLN Batam on 15th October 2012. Based on the agreement, the PLTG will supply electricity in Batam for 20 years since the year 2014. The PLTG will get its gas supply at 20 BBTUD as part of domestic obligation from Block A Natuna which is operated by Premier Oil Natuna Sea BV in Kepulauan Riau.

Fazil Alfitri further noted that the operational schedule of the power plant will mainly depend on the availability of gas. ?This is something that we?re still discussing with the energy and mineral resources ministry, upstream authority SKK Migas, the seller of gas from Block A Natuna, and PT PLN Batam,? he said.

To supply the gas, a consortium of PT PLN Batam and Medco Power through its subsidiary PT Universal Batam Energy is working on the procurement of gas pipes at the length of 14 kilometer that will be followed with its construction later this year. The gas pipeline will have a strategic role in transporting the gas from Natuna islands to Batam island.

Medco Power Group is currently owned 51 percent by PT Saratoga Power, and 49 percent by PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk.

Currently, Medco Power Group has owned gas-fired power plants at a total capacity of more than 380 MW in Batam, Palembang (South Sumatera). It also owns and operates the steam power plant (PLTU) Tanjung Jati B with a generation capacity of 1,320 MW in Jepara, Central Java.

Other than those, the company is developing mini hydro power plants (PLTMH) with a total capacity of 105 MW in Sukabumi, Cianjur, and Sulawesi, and two geothermal power plants, namely in Sarulla (North Sumatera) at a capacity of 110 MW and in Ijen (East Java) at a capacity of 110 MW.
