Medco?s gas well catches fire

IDX-listed PT Medco Energi Internasional announced that a fire incident occurred on Sunday at its JR-57 gas well in Block A PSC in Blang Nisam village, Indra Makmue district, Aceh Timur regeny, Aceh.
The firm said it is an old well, which had been plugged by the previous operator before its subsidiary Medco E&P took over the operatorship of the block and had stopped operation since 2000.
The well is far away from surrounding villages.
The firm said the fire incident is suspected to have occurred because some people irresponsibly tried to bring the well back into production.
The incident has thus far caused neither fatalities, nor environmental damage and the firm is coordinating with the police and local authorities to put out the fire, Teguh Imanto, Senior Manager of Relations at Medco E&P, said.
