PT Medco Power Generation Indonesia (MPGI), a newly set up subsidiary of IDX-listed energy company PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk, aims to develop power plants in Indonesia as the group seeks to become a leading independent power producer in the country, MPGI President Director Lukman Mahfoedz said.

He told Petromindo.com on Friday that in the first stage, the company is teaming up with Mitsui Co Ltd to win tender for PLTGU Jawa I 2x800 MW combined-cycle power plant project held by state-owned electricity firm PT PLN.

He said that the company is currently waiting for PLN to announce the result of the tender.

Lukman said that while MPGI will focus on developing large non-renewable power plants, its affiliate PT Medco Power Indonesia will focus on developing smaller capacity power plants of less than 500 MW particularly based on renewable sources of energy such as geothermal and hydro, and on maintenance services.
