Publicly listed oil firm PT Medco Energi Internasional has planned to build a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plant in South Sumatra in 2003 using natural gas from its oil field in the province, Neraca daily reported.

The company will spend US$15-19 million on the project, Medco finance director Sugiharto was quoted as saying.

The plant will convert 200 tons of propane gas and butane per day.

Sugiharto said that natural gas to be used for the LPG plant will come from its Rimau oil field in South Sumatra. So far, gas coming out from area oil wells has been burned.

LPG produced by the company would be sold to state power company PLN, Sugiharto said.

Rimau is Medco?s largest oil field which turns out 75,000 barrels per day of oil. They account for 69 percent of its total oil output (*)
