Medco to spend US$400M on EOR

Medco Energy International will invest up to US$400 million for its enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in 2014 and 2015 to arrest the declining trend of production in its Kaji Semoga field, South Sumatra.

Medco Energy International Tbk Director of operation, Frila Berlini Yaman said that the company had decided to apply the chemical flooding technology for the EOR. ?This method is categorized as tertiary recovery. It will arrest the declining trend or even increase the oil production in the field for the next 15 years,? she told OGE Asia and Petromindo in Jakarta over the weekend.

She said that Kaji field had passed a primary stage, and since 2005 has been undergoing a secondary recovery using the waterflooding method.

During the period of 2005 until now, the company managed to get an addition of 14 million barrels of oil from the field. And with the waterflooding, Kaji field can now produce 15,000 bopd, she said.

?To get further increase from the Kaji field we have to apply the tertiary recovery by selecting a technology that is suitable with the reservoir characteristic. We conclude that the chemical flooding is an appropriate one for the Kaji field,? she said.

Beside the Kaji field, Medco will also apply the EOR in Jene field, which is currently still in an initial stage of study and laboratory test.
