President Megawati Soekarnoputri Monday dedicated the completion of a 470-kilometer gas pipeline project from South Sumatra to Singapore during a ceremony on Batam Island.

Attending the project launching ceremony were Singapore?s Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and energy ministers from other countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The project is the result of a collaborative effort between Indonesia?s state gas transmission and distribution firm PGN and Singapore?s PowerGas. It will supply 350 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas from South Sumatra to Singapore for 20 years. It is expected to generate some US$9 billion in revenue for Indonesia over 20 years.

?These projects underscore the close and mutually beneficial cooperation between Singapore and Indonesia,? the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement on Monday.

The South Sumatra-Singapore pipeline project is the second natural gas pipeline between the two countries. The first, completed two years ago and linking West Natuna gas fields in the South China Sea to Singapore, transmits 250 MMCFD.

Last year, another pipeline started supplying some 150 MMCFD of gas from West Natuna to Malaysia.

Oil and gas director general Iin Arifin Takhyan said Indonesian gas producers were in talks with potential gas buyers from other ASEAN countries, including firms from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, on the possible purchase of gas from Indonesia.

The official said that the South Sumatra-Singapore pipeline could serve as an embryo for a wider Trans-ASEAN gas pipeline. (godang)
