President Megawati Soekarnoputri Thursday relaunched a number of large power plant projects suspended in the wake of the 1997 economic crisis.
The relaunching ceremony took place in Jepara, Central Java, the site of the Tanjung Jati B power plant, one of the shelved projects. The President also relaunched other projects including toll road projects on the same occasion.
PLN signed power purchase contracts with 27 independent power producers (IPP) before the Asian financial crisis hit the country in 1997. The government suspended their power projects in the wake of the crisis, which led to years of dispute involving PLN, the IPPs and the government.
PLN claimed recently that almost all of the disputes had been settled, and that it had reached agreements on a new pricing formula for power supplied by the IPPs. (godang)
