Coal mining company PT Medco Energi Mining International (MEMI) said that it has suspended since end of last year the operation of its coal concession in Nunukan, North Kalimantan, operated by subsidiary PT Duta Tambang Rekayasa.
F. Hary Kristiono, Head of Business Development and Marketing of MEMI told Petromindo.com on Wednesday that the company suspended the operation of the Nunukan mine due to the lingering down turn of the coal market.
?Since December 31, 2015 we have stopped our operation, now our activity at the mining site is conducting reclamation and re-vegetation,? he said, adding that the company will resume the coal mining operation if the coal price has recovered.
?If the coal price is good we will resume our coal mining activity,? he said. Hary revealed at least 400 employees have been laid off. He added that in 2015 MEMI only produced 350,000 tons of coal from the target of 600,000 tons.
