MEMR selects special ports for coal

The government is getting closer to realize its plan of controlling coal exports by deciding 14 special seaports for coal in Sumatra and Kalimantan.

The energy and mineral resources ministry?s (MEMR) Mineral and Coal Program Director Paul Lubis said on Friday that the government made the decision after meeting with a number of companies and regional administrations.

?Next week, director general of mineral and coal will meet with officials of transportation ministry to discuss about the finalization of the 14 seaports as special ports for coal,? he said as reported by Kontan on Saturday.

He noted that although the energy and mineral resources ministry had decided on the 14 seaports, a final decision will depend on the ministry of transportation. ?It is the authority of the transportation ministry to take a final decision on the seaports,? he said.

According to him, the special seaports are located in Sumatra and Kalimantan. But East Kalimantan as the largest producer will have many seaports. With the appointment of the special ports, the government hopes to be able to control the volume and value of exported coal and how much will be state income from the commodity.

Paul noted that if there is no obstacle, the seaports will start operation next year (2015). For better management, the government will apply an information management system called Mineral and Coal One Map Indonesia (MOMI) which is currently being developed.

Commenting on the seaport plan, the transportation ministry?s Sea Transportation Director General Bobby R. Mamahit said on Friday that his ministry has given a green light to the plan. ?This is a great breakthrough. It is aimed to facilitate the process of serving and supervising the coal exports,? he said.

But he said that he could not yet confirmed the time of starting operation as they need to consult first with the ministry of energy and mineral resources. (*)
