At least three companies, from Malaysia, the Middle East and Indonesia respectively, are participating in the current tender to build a 2 x 100 MW coal-fired power plant in Riau, according to a senior official of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.
Director General of Electricity and Energy Utilization J. Purwono said in Jakarta on Thursday that state-owned electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) was conducting a ?beauty contest? to find a winner of the US$200 million power project.
He refused to disclose the names of the companies, but said that the Middle East company would be backed by Islamic Development Bank in financing the power project.
The power plant is expected to begin operation in 2012. (bernard)
