The plans by coal mining firm PT BHP Kendilo to transform its ex-mining sites in the Petangis village in Tanjung Aru sub district, Pasir regency, East Kalimantan, into a park and tourism spot may not be ruined due to logging activity in the area.

The local Kaltim Post daily quoted a non-governmental organization activist (NGO) Ahmad Baidawi as saying that an unknown timber company had started a logging activity in the BHP mining site.

He said that if the logging activity continued, the plans to transform the ex-mining site into a tourism spot could be ruined.

BHP had proposed the ex-mining site would be transform into a tourism spot after its mining contract in the area ended in 2002. The Petangis villagers also hope the company to realize the plan because it would help provide more economic opportunities for the people.

The local villagers and NGOs had called on the government and BHP to take serious action to stop the logging activity. (*)
