Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Jero Wacik on Monday inaugurated two biomass-based power plants each with a capacity of 15 MW in Medan, North Sumatra.
The power plants, owned by PT Growth Asia, which is part of the Growth Steel Group (GSG), an integrated steel maker, started construction in 2011. While the electricity from the plants would be used by the group, the estimated excess power of 20 MW would be sold the North Sumatra unit of state-owned electricity firm PLN.
The power plants used feedstock from renewable sources such as oil palm empty fruit bunches, rice husks, corn cobs and wood dusts.
GSG also constructed two units of similar power plants in 2008 and 2010, each with a capacity of 15 MW, in which the excess 15 MW power supply had also be sold to PLN.
