Industry Minister MS Hidayat said that workers of gold and copper giant PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) deserved to get a 20-percent pay hike as it can comply with all minimum living standard criteria in Papua.

?According to me a 20-percent pay hike is very appropriate, ? he told Petromindo.com on Tuesday.

High inflation in remote Papua has pushed the workers to demand for a 40-percent hike on payment, but the management only offered a 15-percent hike. Both sides failed to come to an agreement by the September deadline, which has now been extended to October 4.
